Pinot Noir

Strawberries and Cream.

If there’s one aroma I get from the Tickerage Pinot grapes it’s strawberries. This, I believe, comes predominantly from the Pinot Noir grape which often displays aromas of red berries.

The name derives from the French for ‘pine’ and ‘black’, the clusters of tightly packed dark grapes resembling the shape of a pine cone.

A tricky grape to cultivate and vinify, André Tchelistcheff (an American post-prohibition winemaker) declared that "God made Cabernet Sauvignon whereas the devil made Pinot Noir." The thin skins and tightly packed bunches can easily lead to problems during the growing season, but the resultant base wines make all the effort worthwhile.

Tightly packed bunches of thin skinned grapes can lead to disease if canopy management isn’t taken seriously.

Creates a characteristic strawberries and cream aroma and flavour to some of our cuvées.

A core ingredient in our Classic and Blanc de Noirs cuvées.
